Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL) is a co-operative of co-operatives with over 160 unique associations and 1,500 locations across Western Canada. The newly launched Co-op app lets users purchase and manage their memberships, view local content created by Co-ops nearby, and access other services available online.
Brand
Co-op has an extremely recognizable and trusted brand for people across Western Canada. For this project, we wanted to preserve a lot of that sentiment while expanding the brand as it grows into new digital environments.
Typography
Open Sans, designed by Google, is used for all type within the app. It has a friendly appearance and is extremely legible, even at small sizes.
Visual hierarchy is created within the app through the use of different weights of Open Sans.
Iconography
Over 130 custom icons were created for the app. The icons were drawn with two-pixel rounded strokes to make them consistent with the fonts used.
All icons are designed on a 24 pixel grid, and follow icon key lines that ensure all icons appear as a consistent size even though they’re made from different shapes.
Colour
Primitive colours were developed to ensure all of Co-op’s business lines and services would be represented within the app.
Both Light and Dark themes are accessible by users from the app settings page. Each component has a token mapped to it, with both a light and dark mode value.
Product
The Co-op App brings separate internal lines of business and membership objectives into one consolidated experience.
The Co-op App was built with a large focus around how both new and existing Co-op Members can forge their existing memberships to their accounts in a seamless way.
Memberships are extremely important to Co-op Members, sometimes being passed down from generation to generation. The new app allows for members to scan their cards at the till and see their equity balance from the previous year right from the Membership tab.
Being able to offer members more ways to interact with Co-op's services was a top priority. While providing a more accessible way to access third-party content like Car Wash and EV Charging, the app still makes room for favourite features like Flyers and Coupons.
Article content is available throughout the app. It allows both FCL and local associations to push content to members without forcing them to leave the app to read it.
